Who Has More?
Matching things one to one helps your child see that "more" means how many, not how much space they take up.
You need
- about 10 toy blocks or large crackers
- 2 plates
How to play
- Put 5 blocks on one plate, close together.
- Put 5 blocks on the other plate, spread far apart.
- Ask which plate has more.
- Take them off and match them in pairs, one from each plate.
Guess first
Which plate do you think has more? Point to it. Now let's pair them up and check.
Three things to ask
- Did any block end up without a partner?
- So who has more?
- Can you make my plate look bigger without adding any?
Easier
Use 3 against 3, then 3 against 4.
Harder
Use 7 against 8, spread differently, and guess before matching.
Watch for
Many children this age pick the spread-out plate. That's normal. Let the matching do the convincing, and play it again another day.
