Finger Flash
Fingers are always with you, and showing amounts on them links the number to a picture your child can make.
You need
- your hands
How to play
- Hide your hand behind your back and put up some fingers, from 1 to 5.
- Show it for a moment, then hide it again.
- Your child shows the same number on their own hand.
- Put your hands side by side and compare.
Guess first
Quick, show me with your fingers how many you think I had. Now let's put our hands together and check.
Three things to ask
- How many fingers are hiding, folded down?
- Can you show three in a different way?
- Which one is easier to see, four or five?
Easier
Keep your hand out longer and use only 1 to 3.
Harder
Use two hands, such as 5 and 2, for numbers up to 10.
Watch for
Some children copy the exact fingers you used, others make the number their own way. Both are good: the second shows they are thinking about how many.
