The Mean Levels the Peaks and Fills the Valleys

The idea
Shave the tall bars down and fill the short ones up; the total never changes, and everyone ends up the same height. That height is the mean: the total divided by how many there are.
A common mix-up
The mean has to be one of the numbers in the list.
Where it stops working
Add one very large number, and after levelling the mean is pulled up by it alone; all four original people end up below the mean.
