Make Ten: Why Split the 5 in 8+5?

The idea

Split the five into two and three, fill up a ten first, and thirteen shows at a glance, with nothing lost.

A common mix-up

Eight plus five means counting up from eight one at a time; breaking the five apart loses some.

Where it stops working

Three plus four is less than ten and doesn't fill the frame, so making ten doesn't help; just count.
