Egg Box Ten
Two rows of five make ten easy to see, so your child can tell at once how many are full and how many are empty.
You need
- an empty egg box with 10 cups (tape over any extra cups)
- 10 balls of scrunched paper or pom-poms
How to play
- Fill the top row first, left to right, then the bottom row.
- Put in some balls while your child watches.
- Ask how many are in and how many cups are empty.
- Fill the empty cups and count to ten together.
Guess first
Don't count yet. How many empty cups do you think there are? Let's fill them and find out.
Three things to ask
- How do you know without counting them all?
- If the top row is full, how many is that?
- Seven in, how many more to make ten?
Easier
Use only the top row of 5.
Harder
Close the lid after a quick look and ask how many are empty.
Watch for
Watch for your child saying "five and two more" for seven. Using the full row of five is exactly the idea this game is for.
Safety
Paper balls and pom-poms are a choking hazard for children under 3. Supervise and tidy them away afterwards.
