Clap Clap Stomp
Hearing and moving to a pattern helps your child notice what repeats, even without anything to look at.
You need
- nothing needed, just space to move
How to play
- Do a rhythm: clap, clap, stomp, clap, clap, stomp.
- Stop and let your child do the next part.
- Try a new one: clap, stomp, stomp.
- Let your child make up a rhythm for you to follow.
Guess first
I'm stopping here. What do you think comes next, a clap or a stomp? Do it, then we'll do the whole thing together.
Three things to ask
- What part keeps coming back?
- Can you turn our rhythm into words, like "dog, dog, cat"?
- If we kept going forever, would it always end in a stomp?
Easier
Use clap, stomp, clap, stomp, and go slowly.
Harder
Use three moves, such as clap, stomp, jump, or try clap, clap, stomp, stomp.
Watch for
Your child may speed up or lose the beat. That's fine: saying the moves out loud usually helps them get back on track.
